This online event, launched in conjunction with Ecoembes, brought together national experts in the Circular Economy, with the participation of almost all the environmental technicians from the region's local councils.
The FMRM, in collaboration with Ecoembes, held the webinar "New Legislation on Waste Management. How Will It Affect Municipalities?"
Presented by María Dolores Muñoz, president of the Federation of Municipalities of the Region of Murcia, this online meeting was one of the first contacts between the region's municipal technicians and officials with the new European waste management objectives and the draft Waste Law, currently being processed.
In the words of the President of the FMRM, "Municipalities must make the commitments that the new laws impose on waste management." She also highlighted the importance of collaboration between local and regional governments to meet the sustainability goals imposed by the EU and the Green Deal.
One of the presentations was given by Luis Mecati, Deputy Director of Circular Economy, Health, and Biodiversity at the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP). In it, Mecati discussed the risks and opportunities facing local authorities and emphasized that achieving the SDGs requires transforming the linear economic model we have been using until now into a Circular Economy model.
The Director General of the Environment of the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia, Francisco Marín, and the Director General of Local and Regional Management of Ecoembes, Ángel Hervella, gave an institutional welcome to the attendees and emphasized the importance of public-private collaboration in achieving the sustainability challenges that the environment, the economy, and society demand.
Waste management in municipalities has become a key component of local government governance, as it influences citizens' perceptions of quality of life and the service capacity of local authorities.
The region's municipalities, supported by the Federation of Municipalities of the Region of Murcia, are increasingly better prepared in waste management and committed to the urban environment and the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. They are the administrations with the greatest capacity to bring the 2030 Agenda's actions closer to citizens and follow the principles and values set forth by the Circular Economy.
