The General Directorate of the Environment of the Region of Murcia, the Federation of Municipalities of Murcia and Ecoembes present the 2019 Recycling Awards in a virtual meeting with representatives of the three municipalities, which became the largest recyclers of packaging last year.
Abarán won the first prize for the third consecutive time, while Beniel and La Unión took second and third prizes respectively.
The president of FMRM, Maria Dolores Muñoz, the SG Manuel Pato, Alberto Fernaández of Ecoembes and the mayors Pedro Lopez Milan, from La Union, Mari Carmen Morales Ferrando, from Beniel and Jesus Gomez Montiel. from Abaran have been the protagonists of this event.
Last year, the inhabitants of Abarán were the ones who deposited the most plastic containers, cans and cartons in the yellow container, making this municipality the largest recycler in the entire Region of Murcia for the third consecutive year. Specifically, each of the inhabitants of Abarán deposited 22,6 kilos of cans, cartons and plastic containers in the yellow container during 2019, above the 20,2 registered in this same municipality the previous year and the 13,5 kilograms of the regional average. For their part, the municipalities of Beniel and La Unión have also been awarded for the percentage increase in their contributions to the yellow container.
These awards, which were announced in a virtual meeting with the mayors representing the municipalities, are part of the “Recycling Awards” competition, jointly organised by the General Directorate of Environment and Mar Menor, the Federation of Municipalities of the Region of Murcia; and Ecoembes, the non-profit environmental organisation that coordinates the recycling of packaging in Spain.
The competition, which was broadcast last year on radio, digital press and social networks in different waves, was contextualized within the regional citizen awareness campaign "Think with Your Lungs", whose objective has been to raise awareness among the citizens of the Region of the importance of recycling cans, cartons and plastic containers in the yellow container, and its direct contribution to the preservation of air quality and care for the environment.
In addition to the recognition of Abarán as the municipality with the most recycling, an award worth 6.000 euros, Beniel was also awarded 5.000 euros as the municipality with the highest percentage increase above the regional average. And La Unión received 4.000 euros for being the municipality that registered the highest percentage increase in the collection of plastic containers, cans and cartons.
The amount of these prizes will be allocated to projects for the enjoyment of the residents of these municipalities. Such as the improvement of children's playgrounds, the incorporation of bio-healthy devices to promote exercise among the elderly, or projects aimed at promoting the selective collection of packaging.
Since the beginning of 2020, a second stage of the 'Think with your lungs' campaign has been underway, along with a new edition of the Recycling Awards competition, which is now about to end. In the spring of 2021, we will find out who are the most recycling municipalities in the Region of Murcia this year that is about to end.
