Minute of silence

The President of the Federation of Municipalities of the Region of Murcia, Joaquín Hernández Gomariz , following the line set by the FEMP for the entire Spanish territory, asks the municipalities of the Region of Murcia for 1 minute of silence, today, July 12 at 12:00 hours as recognition of society for its mobilization in those days, which was decisive for the end of ETA.

This is the full text of the letter from Abel Caballero, President of the FEMP:

“This July 12 marks twenty years since one of the cruelest crimes of the unfortunately extensive and appalling criminal absurdity of the now democratically defeated terrorist group ETA.

This July 12 marks twenty years since the murder of the PP Councillor in the Ermua Town Hall, Miguel Ángel Blanco, after two days of kidnapping and a macabre countdown due to the ETA ultimatum, which made the murder hurt us in the depths of our souls and consciences.

Twenty years of horror, but also twenty years of an exemplary and unequivocally democratic citizen response: a resounding and unanimous 'this is as far as we go'. A civic reaction that was ultimately decisive in, first, total isolation and, later, absolute defeat from freedom, the end of ETA.

For all these reasons, as President of the FEMP, I would like to invite all local authorities to remember Miguel Ángel Blanco on 12 July and to encourage this event, with rallies in our municipalities at 12 noon, and with him all, absolutely all, the victims of the terrorist outrage that caused us so much pain. A heartfelt and sincere remembrance for Miguel Ángel, for all the victims and their families and friends, but also, at the same time, a recognition and a tribute to the Spanish society that rose up democratically on 12 July in defence of freedom, peace and coexistence.

To all of you, our respect and our admiration. And to the memory of Miguel Ángel Blanco, our tribute and all our love.”
