Life Flood Proff

LIFE FloodProof is a European initiative aimed at protecting the municipalities of Ceutí, Lorquí, Alguazas and Las Torres de Cotillas from the risk of flooding.

The project will transform these towns into "sponge cities" to better manage torrential rains. To achieve this, Nature-based Solutions (sustainable drainage systems) will be implemented, allowing water to filter naturally, reducing the impact of floods and river pollution.

In addition, an early warning system with sensors will be installed to alert the population in time. LIFE Flood Proof aims to create a safer, more resilient, and future-proof urban environment.

The specific objectives of the project are the following:

1: Increase knowledge about the characterization of flood risk and the possibilities for risk mitigation at the local level.

2: Adapt urban planning and plan prevention and protection measures based on the conditions foreseen in the flood hazard and risk maps.

3: Test measures to improve permeability and drainage in the urban area and increase the acceptability and recognition of the benefits of SUDS and SbN in Mediterranean climates.

4: Improve protection strategies and early and real-time warning systems, encouraging collaboration with public and private agents and civil society.

5: Increase awareness and training of social agents and citizens on the risk of flooding.

6: Update and advance the implementation of the Floods Directive in the Segura River Basin District and contribute to its implementation in other European basins.
