The FEMP holds its Commission of Alfonsí Towns and Cities in Murcia, with the aim of continuing to hold events throughout Spain

If there is a treasure for the history of our region, it is the heart of Alfonso X the Wise, buried in the Cathedral of Murcia and owner of streets, institutes and hundreds of things that speak of the Murcian character. And this is what the monarch wanted, who valued the loyalty of the Murcians in their battles and established the foundations of today's Murcian society.

The Alfonsine Towns and Cities Commission of the FEMP, created around the figure of King Alfonso X the Wise on the occasion of his eighth centenary, was held on June 4 at the town hall of the capital of the region and a member of the Federation of Municipalities of the RM. This commission was created to promote the cultural heritage of the Wise King even after the celebration of his centenary has ended. This was made clear by the participants in this meeting, among whom was the general secretary of the FMRM, Manuel Pato.

“The Alfonsine Towns and Cities Commission, established in Toledo on 23 November last year, set out with the dual objective of promoting the cultural, tourist and economic dynamism of towns and cities around the figure of the Wise King, on the one hand, and of generating an exchange of experiences and projects to foster mutual support in the enhancement of historical heritage,” explains FEMP.

The participating municipalities throughout the country are doing their homework with the design and development of cultural and tourist programmes around the figure of Alfonso X the Wise. And it was precisely in this Commission, in which numerous mayors from different parts of Spain were present, among whom the mayor of Murcia José Antonio Serrano participated, that all these activities were known.

Manuel Pato, representative of the Federation of Municipalities of the Region of Murcia at the event, said during his speech, "one could say that the region is an important Alfonsine territory, with four strategic municipalities in its history: Cartagena, Lorca, Mula and Murcia, therefore, the name of Murcia is essential in this Commission of Alfonsine Cities and Towns."

Pato commented that, “one could say that Alfonso X was a municipalist king, a concept that we at FMRM carry as our banner, and through which we defend and bring together all the municipalities in our community, playing a cohesive role that makes us stronger to achieve important goals that write our own history.”

The Secretary General of the FMRM concluded by explaining that, “the commissions are the heart of the federations of municipalities, since their results are a reflection of the consensual work, something that is being demonstrated by the Commission of Towns and Cities that has brought us together here to pay tribute to the long legacy of Alfonso X the Wise.”
