El Almudi These days, the city is hosting an exhibition of electoral posters, press and images from the first elections to vote for municipal governments.
The Federation of Municipalities of the Region of Murcia is celebrating this week the 40th anniversary of democratic town councils with a series of activities that began this morning with the inauguration, at the Almudí Palace, of an exhibition of electoral posters, press and images of the first local elections in the Region. Likewise, homage was paid to the mayors of 79 by giving them a miniature key to the city.
“You took on the responsibility of leading our towns and cities when everything still had to be done. You left your mark on each of the municipalities, and today they are a reflection of your work and dedication. That is why you deserve this modest recognition,” as Joaquín Hernández, president of the FMRM and mayor of Lorquí, highlighted during the inauguration of this anniversary.
Along with the President of the Federation, the event was chaired by the Mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, the Minister of the Presidency and Finance, Javier Celdrán, and the Secretary General of FMRM, Manolo Pato. Thus, the different presidents of FMRM over the years, Antonio Bódalo, José Méndez and Miguel Ángel Cámara, all of them mayors of the city of Murcia, dedicated a few words to those present.
After a tour of the graphic exhibition of the municipal elections, the recognition of the first mayors of the Region of Murcia took place, and the different presidents of the Federation shared their experiences at the head of this body, highlighting the role that the town councils have played in the progress and development of our country.
“The FMRM is a key figure for municipalism, and for this reason we must persist and join forces in the achievement of better objectives for the citizens” stated Bódalo. Méndez pointed out “the capacity of political figures to put the well-being of the citizens above their own interests has made the FMRM the instrument of consensus and the union of forces necessary for our Community”. Likewise, Cámara defined the work of the municipalities as essential to fulfill their responsibilities since, thanks to the FMRM, all the municipalities of the Region can be given a voice.
Finally, the current president stated that “local administrations are and will continue to be absolutely necessary. We are the administration closest to the citizens. We have always been clear about what our mission is: to improve the lives of our neighbours and meet their needs. Even without support, without recognition, without powers and without legislation.”
The activities to celebrate the 40th anniversary of municipal democracy will continue with the celebration of the FMRM General Assembly next Friday 29th in Almudí.
