At FEMP, we firmly believe in equality and respect for all people, regardless of their sexual orientation. We celebrate and support LGBT+ Pride because it is an opportunity to honour those who have fought for equality and the rights of the LGBT+ community around the world. The term “Pride” designates the self-love or esteem that each person has for themselves as deserving of respect and consideration.
On this International LGBT+ Pride Day, the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces reaffirms its unwavering commitment to equality, diversity and human rights. And for this reason, one more year, we call on all local entities to join us in celebrating diversity and in the fight for a more just and inclusive society. We recognize the achievements made, but also the challenges we still have to face.
As we celebrate the progress made, it is also crucial to recognize and condemn the discriminatory policies that persist in some countries. The lack of progress in protecting the rights of LGBTI+ people in certain places is a cause for serious concern. These policies not only perpetuate discrimination and violence, but also represent a flagrant violation of human rights.
At this time, when Spain's foreign policy has the defence of human rights among its priorities, it is necessary to advocate for the adoption of inclusive policies at an international level and to pressure those governments that violate LGBTI+ rights to modify these practices.
We recognize that the LGTBI+ community has faced a history of discrimination, oppression and violence. It is important to remember that the fight for equality and justice for the LGTBI+ community is not over.
The FEMP will continue to work tirelessly to promote equality and combat discrimination in all its forms. The commitment of the FEMP and the City Councils of Spain is to continue promoting progress in terms of equality and rights for the LGTBI+ community. It is necessary to continue working towards a future where all people, regardless of their sexual orientation, sex or expression of identity, can live with dignity, respect and freedom.
For all these reasons, the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP) invites all Local Governments to adhere to this Institutional Declaration:
- Committed to equality and justice for all people, defending the rights and equality of the LGTBI+ community in our institutions and in our towns and cities.
- Putting a stop to hate speech against the LGTBI+ community in any area that legitimizes and encourages discrimination and aggression. In 2023, hate crimes reached 1.606, which represents an increase of 33,1% compared to 2022.
- Promoting Diversity Education in a general way as a vehicle to combat LGTBIphobia and leave behind hatred, aggression, fear and intolerance
- Working at the local level to educate and raise awareness in our community on issues related to sexual orientation, to ensure that each person is equally respected in our society.
