Institutional Statement on the Occasion of International LGBT Pride Day

As every June 28th, local entities join in the commemoration of
International LGBT Pride Day. This date commemorates the importance of
to continue defending the real and effective equality of LGBTI people and of
to strengthen a democratic coexistence based on respect, freedom and
dignity.

On the occasion of this commemoration, local entities underline their firm
commitment to promoting the rights of all people, the creation
of safe spaces and the prevention of all forms of discrimination. Our towns and cities must be places where every person can freely develop their life project.

On this day, we acknowledge the progress made and reaffirm our commitment
local to continue working towards a fairer and more equal society.
The Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP) reaffirms, once again,
their commitment to the values ​​of equality, respect, freedom and dignity.

Local authorities play a fundamental role in promoting
safe and respectful environments where diversity is valued.
We will continue to promote public policies that foster equal treatment and
protection of human rights. It is also necessary to continue
strengthening the role of civil society organizations, including
LGBTI entities in the development of public policies.

Despite the progress made in Spain, situations of
inequality and violence that we must address with respect for the framework
constitutional principles of equality and freedom.

To achieve this, we consider it necessary to:

  • Develop educational and awareness campaigns that promote
    real and effective equality, coexistence and respect for diversity
  • Create protocols for assisting victims of attacks motivated by
    intolerance or discrimination.
  • To train municipal staff on matters of sexual and gender diversity.
  • To put a stop to hate speech against the LGBTI community that in
    any area legitimizes and encourages discrimination and aggression.
  • The Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP) expresses its support for public policies that promote equal opportunities and mutual respect. Education, awareness-raising, dialogue, and coordinated action by institutions are key tools for strengthening social cohesion and promoting the rejection of any manifestation of hatred, intolerance, or violence.

Spain has made significant progress in rights and freedoms thanks to
Democratic consensus. The defense of LGBTI rights is not
It responds not to an ideological question, but to a democratic commitment to the
Human rights and equality. Therefore, we invite all governments
local businesses to join in this commemoration, which is also a recognition of
those who, from activism and social movements, fought during
decades facing persecution, silence and discrimination.
