April 8. International Roma Day

April 8, 3

The FMRM extols the equal rights of this people, and the need to be recognized, respected and valued.

“Institutional recognition of the Roma People, but also the guarantee of equal opportunities and treatment for Roma men and women, must be an effective commitment of the public authorities in the celebration of this 50th anniversary of the establishment of Roma Day. A commitment that, in this stage of reconstruction and recovery of the country after the crisis caused by the Coronavirus, must translate into concrete measures to reduce inequality, fight discrimination, and advance the rights and citizenship of the Roma People. Let us not wait another 50 years to repair this historical injustice.”

This is how the institutional declaration ends on the occasion of the International Day of the Roma People (April 8), by the Fundación Secretariado Gitano, on the 50th anniversary of the celebration of the I World Gypsy Congress. With these words of commitment, we join them, since the Federation of Municipalities of the Region of Murcia assumed this social responsibility in support of the recognition of a cultural identity still unknown to the majority of our society, marked by discrimination.
